Other hospitals in Nepal
This website focusses on Kanti Children's Hospital as this is where most of my experience lies. However, there are of course many other hospitals and opportunities to consider for an elective in Nepal. Here's a non-exhaustive list of some of the more popular ones, extracted from Mark Wilson's Medic's Guide to Work and Electives Around the World. If any sound appealing, do a Google search on the hospital and see what comes up.In Kathmandu
- Bir Hospital, Tundikhel, Kathmandu
A large, busy general hospital in central Kathmandu that serves patients from across Nepal. - Prasuti Griha Government Maternity Hospital, Thapathali, PO Box 5307, Kathmandu
Nepal's main maternity hospital - 12,000+ deliveries per year. It has a Special Care Baby Unit. - Patan Hospital, United Mission to Nepal, PO Box 126, Patan, Kathmandu
Situated on the outskirts of Kathmandu, gets good reports from students.
In Pokhara
- Manipal College of Medical Science, PO Box 155, Upallo Deep, Pokhara 16
Apparently a new teaching hospital has been developed here. Eye camps are also run from this hospital to serve rural areas. - Western Regional Hospital, Pokhara
Has a good reputation, and is run by the Nepali Government and INF. Surgical procedures are commonly related to leprosy and traffic accidents. - Green Pastures Hospital, Pokhara
Tertiary leprosy referral hospital. - Drug Education Programme, PO Box 5, Pokhara
An outreach project to distribute needles and condoms, and generally prevent drug use.
Rural Hospitals
- BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan
A former British military hospital, now under Government control. 150 beds. - Amda Hospital, Damak, Jhapa
Set up by a Japanese charity for Bhutanese refugees, now run by the United Nations. - United Mission to Nepal Hospital, Tansen
Subject of the book Don't Let the Goats Eat the Loquat Trees, an interesting account of an American missionary doctor's time as a surgeon in this remote area of Nepal. The book is recommended, and the hospital sounds well set-up too. - UMN Okhaldunga Hospital, c/o UMN Post Box 126, Kathmandu
Three hours walk from the nearest airstrip. Three days walk from the nearest road - this will be a remarkable experience! - Kunde Hospital, Kunde, near Makhe Bazaar (c/o Himalayan Trust, PO Box 224, Kathmandu)
Set up by Sir Edmund Hilary for Sherpa people in the Everest region. Apparently they don't normally take elective students, but if you're keen it might be worth a try.
